For grades
K-2, the book selection is David's
Drawings by Cathryn Falwell.
A shy young African American boy makes
friends in school by letting his
classmates help with his drawing of a
bare winter tree. One winter day David
sees a beautiful bare tree. As soon as
he gets to school, this shy young boy
who loves to draw begins a beautiful
picture of the tree he has seen. One by
one his classmates come by with
suggestions for the drawing, but the fun
really starts when they all join David
to add grass, stickers, clouds, a
rainbow, and other imaginative details
to the picture. And as the drawing
develops, David overcomes his shyness
and finds a way to make new friends.
David's
Drawings is a gentle celebration of a
child's creativity that speaks directly
to the experiences of children. This
reassuring story is sure to provide
comfort and encouragement as children
face the challenge of making friends in
new situations. |

For grades
3-5, the book selection is Pizza Party
by Karen English.
Third-grader Richard and his friends are
just four days away from setting a
record for excellent behavior and
earning a classroom pizza party when
disaster strikes—their beloved teacher
is out sick, and the strictest, meanest
substitute has taken her place! Will
their dreams of pizza be dashed when the
sub suspects that some of them have been
cheating?
This gently
humorous installment in a chapter book
series about a diverse group of
elementary schoolers by Coretta Scott
King honoree Karen English offers
spot-on storytelling, relatable
characters and situations, and plenty of
action. |
